The popular Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival has a new home and a new name: Meadow Highland Games and Celtic Festival. The event will take place Saturday and Sunday at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell, home of the State Fair of Virginia.

The event features something for everyone, from "Wee Ones Athletics" for children to the "Bonnie Knees" competition to music and dance.

A highlight will be the 2009 North American Highland Games, with 35 sanctioned events including Sheaf Toss, Scottish Hammers, Weights for Distance, Open/Braemar Stones and more.

There will be demonstrations of piping and drumming, Scottish fiddle, Irish fiddle and harp and Highland dance, with performances by the Richmond Irish Dance Group, Scottish Country Dancers of Richmond, Crossroad Irish Dance Troupe and others.

More than 50 clan tents will surround the games field, with background on Scottish lineage and Celtic roots. There will be a parade of clans on Sunday.

Musical offerings include:

Barleyjuice--pan-Celtic traditional and rock band

Rathkeltair--Celtic Rock Jam Fusion

Poisoned Dwarf--semi-traditional Celtic band with subtle hints of rock and bluegrass

Port Righ--featuring Jo and Wayne Morrison, pairing Celtic harp and bagpipe

Robin Rich and Common Threads--British Isles and American folk

Tinker's Dam--a conglomerate of Celtic music with an influx of traditional American folk and bluegrass

Uisce Beatha--Irish-American Pub Music

Terpsichore--featuring Elke Baker on fiddle and Liz Donaldson on piano.

On Saturday there will be a parade of dogs of the British Isles, and a blessing of the animals and sheepdog demonstration will be held on Sunday.

The festival also features traditional Celtic foods, including fish and chips, Cornish pasties, Scotch eggs, sausage rolls and more.

There will also be 73 vendors and artisans with authentic Scottish and Irish wares.

Gates are open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Gate tickets are $19 per day or $27 for the weekend. Children 10 and under are admitted free and parking is free.

Dogs are welcome for a $5 charge, and must have valid rabies certification and a non-tractable leash.

Advance tickets can be purchased online at statefairva.org, for a $5 savings.
