CULPEPER DEPUTY IS GIVING UP THE GHOST

Culpeper deputy to end long-running annual Haunted Woods event after this year

Date published: 10/26/2009

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON

It will be the end of an era.

For more than two decades, Culpeper County Deputy Sheriff Nathaniel "Nate" Jasper has frightened thousands of people each Halloween with his Haunted Woods.

After this week, that longstanding Culpeper tradition will come to an end.

"I'm not going to do it anymore after this year," Jasper said.

The ghoulish celebration was abbreviated two years ago when an altercation broke out between two people in line. And last year, Jasper cancelled the event because both Culpeper High School and Eastern View High School had home football games that weekend.

But the Culpeper native, who has been honored by the county for his work on the popular event, said he wanted to stage the Haunted Woods one last year.

Jasper and more than a half-dozen of his friends work for about two weeks creating a Haunted Woods guaranteed to frighten even the strongest of heart.

The event, which Jasper funds himself, will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday behind his home on the Sperryville Pike about five miles west of Culpeper, across from the new Salem Fire Hall.

Ghosts, vampires and other fiendish things begin to stir about 7 p.m.

There is no admission charge.

Screaming is permitted.
