It's hard to compete with caramel apples and funnel cakes, a 100-foot slide and a giant pumpkin cannon, but Steve Shannon did his best yesterday as he made a stop at Belvedere Plantation's Harvest Fest in the final days of his campaign for attorney general.
Shannon, a delegate and former prosecutor from Fairfax County, faces Republican Ken Cuccinelli, a state senator and attorney who is also from Fairfax, in the Nov. 3 election.
He's running as a Democrat, but yesterday Shannon told the folks he could pull from the festivities long enough to talk to that he doesn't think political party should matter when choosing an attorney general.
"It's not supposed to be a partisan office, it's supposed to be about keeping people safe," Shannon told one man he greeted. "I'm going to the fast-growing suburbs now because that's where people vote for the individual, not the party."
The crowd at Belvedere was heavy on strollers, and Shannon swapped stories of teething and other baby trials with parents, mentioning to many of them that the youngest of his three children is 5 months old.
That provided a ready segue to some of the centerpieces of his campaign resume.
He and his wife worked in 1999 to bring the AMBER Alert system for rescuing abducted children to Northern Virginia.
Protecting children from Internet predators is a major component of his campaign platform.
While he was walking from a giant "pillow jump" to a racetrack for kid-powered pedal versions of John Deere tractors, Shannon got a report on some fresh polling.
Lauren Howard, a seventh-grader at King George Middle School, told him he'd won her class's mock election.
"That just made my day," he said.
Shannon said he'd be trying to spend a lot of time in the Fredericksburg area in particular as Election Day nears.
"I care a lot about making sure people in Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg know who I am and know I'm running to advance public safety," he said. "Just getting my name out in this community and talking about my work as a prosecutor is very important to me in this last week."
