We'll regret giving the Wilderness to Walmart
I read with interest the Oct. 18 Viewpoints article by Ellen Ruppel Shell ["What price, America? The high cost of 'cheap'"].
As a history major, I would be remiss, and my old professor would haunt me in this season of ghosts, if I did not respond.
It was in the early 1960s that I took a graduate-level course called "Civil War and Reconstruction" taught by Dr. Jefferson Davis Bragg, chairman of the history department at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Is this not a new volley in the "War of Northern Aggression"?
Wait! Wait! These folks are from Bentonville, Ark.
Have we never seen an old building torn down and replaced by a modern edifice, only to wish we could go back?
Where would this country be without its Mount Vernons and Montpeliers to relive the past?
I am quite aware that we are talking about raw ground, but once it's gone, it's gone.
Think of all those brave men and their families (both North and South) who made the ultimate sacrifice; then think of a Walmart facade.

The Luddites are alive and well.. I guess they go to Mom &
Pop to get their cheap Chinese stuff.
Just more sentimental gibberish..

Even without that one family you speak of, I'm sure Wal Mart will do just fine. I understand that there are many people that feel the same as this one family, but there are many more that will frequent the store. As for the Chinese merchandise, did you ask this family where they were going to go instead of Wal Mart? Perhaps Target? Maybe K-Mart? Costco? 'Cause we all know these stores don't sell anything made in China, right?

Orange County citizens would have you believe everybody
that lives in LOW is drooling at the thought of having a
Walmart so close. But let me tell you I know for a fact there
are families who plan to never enter the store. I spoke with
a family just last Sunday. The wife told me they never go to
Walmart because everything is made in China and they will
not be going to the Wilderness Walmart either.
Left Wing Hatred of WalMart or real regret?

Did you write this letter when McDonald's went in? Sheetz? Funny they are closer to the "hallowed"ground yet there is ne'er a peep about those establishments from the WallieWorld haters. This country is supposed to be free. Well in a free country a company can buy land zoned for commercial use and utilize it as such. Nice try from the nanny-staters to demonize freedom.
