VRE isn't the only issue in Spotsylvania
Fitz Johnson's Oct. 22 op-ed expresses with clarity the need to embrace VRE, public transportation alternatives, and the benefits of offering interested businesses transportation alternatives in the I-95 corridor ["How can Republicans be trying to derail VRE?"].
Arguments to the contrary hinge on excuses about subsidizing commuters, inability to withdraw from VRE, and the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel.
It is unfortunate that the election debate in the Lee Hill and Battlefield districts has been reduced to membership in VRE. Lost in this discussion are all of the other critical issues affecting Spotsylvanians, such as smart growth, taxes, public safety, and comprehensive planning for the inevitable economic recovery.
Supervisors Benjamin Pitts and Gary Skinner have shown in their time on the Board of Supervisors that they have a broader perspective for the future and are listening to the voters of Spotsylvania County.
I encourage voters in the Lee Hill and Battlefield districts to support their two incumbents, Benny Pitts and Gary Skinner.

Does VRE have the potential to generate ....say 10,000
new homes in the Lee Hill / Northern Caroline county area?
If you think it could potentially do so - what is it that will
force that growth to be "Smart"?
Do people who support VRE think that Smart Growth is
more development like Fawn Lake or Lee's Parke?
Normally the phrases "Smart Growth" and Greenfield
development don't go in the same sentence.
How many acres of Lee's Hill is designated for water/sewer
Smart Growth?

Anyone who believes VRE has any impact on gas prices is
embarrassingly ignorant or denying reality and
overwhelming evidence. Gas prices fluctuate way more than
2% every day, silly. Please try to understand what this
means. You can only say no to the scary gas tax by buying
gas where Yakabobski and McGuire buy gas: in the land of
make believe. Spotsy also has one of the LOWEST tax
rates in VA. Republican anti-tax histrionics aren't needed in
Spotsy.
Vote for Pitts and Skinner

We're already paying the equivalent of the gas tax, as detailed studies of regional prices show with clarity. Unfortunately, that revenue is going back to the fossil fuel industry and not to Spotsylvania transportation projects. Pitts and Skinner did the right thing in voting for VRE and they should be re-elected.

Blitzburgh, you are already paying more for gas than Stafford residents. Your argument just doesn't hold water. Please get the facts. I was opposed to the VRE at first, but once I did some research I realized that Spotsy will actually benefit from membership.

issues for voters to be concerned with. Like the current BOS voting to raise taxes over and over. If you want the VRE plus your taxes raised while you home values plummet, then vote for Skinner and Pitts. If not vote to replace them.
