Louisa dentist John Andre will pay cash for trick-or-treaters' extra Halloween candy next week, then he'll send all the chocolate and chewy treats to soldiers in Iraq.
Andre is sponsoring a Halloween candy buyback tomorrow through Friday at his office in the Louisa Town Center. He's paying $1 a pound. It's the first time Andre, who also has an office in Glen Allen, has tried the unusual campaign to cut back on cavities.
"I had somebody say they're going to bring $300 in candy, but I don't think I'll get that much," he said.
Children can bring the candy any day next week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The dentist also is giving away two free computers to children who do something good in their community.
Through mid-January, Andre is holding a "Do a Good Deed Contest." Children 18 and younger can write detailed essays about the good deeds they have done.
Children can send their essays to Andre at 208 B Elm Ave., Louisa, Va. 23093.

I have a friend whose husband is in Afganistan and about once a month she sends him a care package of goodies to share with everyone because they can't get candy there. They love getting the packages from her.

Quit being such a grinch! I think this is a pretty cool idea. I'm sure the soldiers really appreciate the candy!

Medicaid patients, sometimes you have to be very diligent in looking for them. We referred people with Medicaid to dentists often when I worked at a family practice office. Call the number on the card and you should get a referral. If the worst the soldiers suffer while in Iraq while in Iraq is a toothache then they are very fortunate indeed. Some people are born to complain and do nothing about the situation and others see a situation and do everything to make it better without complaining.

Having teeth done is a service, not a right. Dentists have had to get special training, have to have special equipement, leases, taxes, employees, and a massive overhead each month. hey can't afford to work on people for free.Hey, I'm all for a gov't issued dentistry program, but the Republicans would rather people not get treatment because they don't have the money or insurance. If you don't like the current system, first step is helping dems pass the health plan.Maybe eventually they'll add denistry to it.

Dentists will do anything to get in the media even if it means rotting the teeth of our troops - most of whom are low income Americans. When they become civilians, most dentists will refuse to fill these soldiers cavities
A Florida woman lost all but 17 teeth, must take Lidocaine for pain, because as a Medicaid patient, she has been turned down by 62 dentists a 12-year-old boy died from the complications of untreated tooth decay because no dentist would treat him as a Medicaid patient.
