Mollie Katzen isn't kidding when she says to just "Get cooking!" The author of the best-selling "Moosewood Cookbook" suggests that novice cooks turn off the TV cooking shows and just get started. And waiting until you have the perfect kitchen is no excuse--who knows when that day will come?
Once you begin, Katzen says, "you'll be eating better, spending less, and feeling good about it."
"Get Cooking" is easy to use. The introduction aims to boost your confidence that you can kick the restaurant habit pretty painlessly, no matter what your experience level. It also offers basic advice to make things easier: clean up as you go along, prep all the items you'll need ahead of time, read and visualize performing the recipe in advance.
Katzen spells out suggestions on basic equipment for your kitchen (types of knives, etc.), and gives color illustrations on how to do some very basic things, like cutting broccoli or chopping garlic.
Then it's time to start using her straightforward recipes. How about homemade chicken noodle soup? Potato salad? Linguini with clam sauce? Burgers or beef stew? There are vegetarian offerings, too.
The purpose of this book is to get the novice cook off to a strong start. Preparing healthful and tasty dishes is fun and easy. The recipes are simple enough to give the kitchen rookie confidence that preparing food for yourself or guests can be a win-win.
