Caroline parents are no-shows on school
Caroline County schools have made great strides in the last few years, with all county schools becoming fully accredited and having met AYP standards.
They are taking another great leap forward as they prepare to renovate or build a new Bowling Green school.
I am disappointed with the community's involvement with this project. There have been four public meetings with an architect on hand to discuss plans with the public. All have had only a handful of parents in attendance.
At the most recent meeting, the architect was present with his staff of seven, including site planners and civil engineers.
The purpose of the meeting was for those from OWPR to hear the community's ideas. Working models were on display.
Please note that a letter went home with every child announcing this meeting. Yet there were only four individuals present from the community.
Folks, we are getting new or wonderfully renovated schools in Bowling Green. There are ideas for increased security, better-equipped classrooms, and even options for after-hours community use of some facilities.
So this should be of concern to everyone, not just parents. This is huge for our small but growing town.
This project is well on its way. The School Board will vote on a plan that will be presented by OWPR in the next month or so.
Please make time to talk to your principal and school board member, and attend upcoming public school meetings. Get involved! When the ground breaks and cement begins to be poured, it will be too late. Let's not have everyone whining about what our schools look like after the fact. Act now!
