Jenkins defeats Hicks, keeps job

Jenkins wins top prosecutor spot

Date published: 11/4/2009

BY EMILY BATTLE

LaBravia Jenkins won her first full term as Fredericksburg's commonwealth's attorney last night, beating challenger Joseph "Jeh" Hicks by 226 votes.

"It was a very hard-fought race, and obviously I think the people of Fredericksburg made the right choice," Jenkins said. "I am very gratified that I can continue the work I have started."

Jenkins, 55, has worked in the city's commonwealth's attorney's office for eight years, and has a total of 14 years of experience as a prosecutor. Her campaign emphasized her experience, while Hicks' campaign emphasized his deep Fredericksburg roots.

Jenkins won a special election last December, beating both Hicks, a partner with the law firm Jarrell, Hicks and Sasser, and Stafford County prosecutor Eric Olsen to serve out the remaining time in Charles Sharp's term. In that election, only 33 votes separated Jenkins from Hicks. Last night, Jenkins won 52 percent of the vote, compared to Hicks' 47 percent.

Jenkins had been serving as the city's lead prosecutor since August of last year, when Sharp left to accept appointment as a circuit court judge.

She said she's happy to have the election behind her. "I cannot wait to get back to work and not be distracted by campaign stuff," she said.

Labravia isn't qualified (posted by jme3223 , Nov. 8, 2009 9:12 am)
Is that why one of Labravia's assistants donated money to hicks.

myperspective...you are correct (posted by libbylu , Nov. 4, 2009 12:25 pm)
Mr. Hicks did attempt to manipulate the numbers to be something that they are not. The top prosecutor in the City should have more integrity than Mr. Hicks showed during his campaign. Ms. Jenkins did not stoop to his level and she kept her job as a result. The right person won.

Say (posted by 2centsworth , Nov. 4, 2009 9:54 am)
what you want about the outcome but let's be real. I asked several times for someone to explain why Mr. Hicks was better for the job than Ms. Jenkins and what experience he brought to the table as a trial attorney. I got NO response. The only thing I heard was how terrible SHE is. Well, whether or not that is true, Mr. Hicks gave no reasurance that he was capable of doing better, Just that he has deep roots in Fredericksburg. Great! But does that make him a competent attorney? I say no!

Your nasty responses are shameful!! (posted by myperspective , Nov. 4, 2009 9:51 am)
Remands, set asides, and mistrials are NOT the same. Hicks manipulated the numbers in an attempt to run on something, any thing, due to his lack of experience. The numbers he used were not case results. Fortunately his attempt to mislead city residents did not work. The right person was re-elected for the job. Period.
