Our allies can't trust us under Obama

Our allies can't trust us under Obama

Recent news reports have indicated that the Iranians are continuing with their nuclear weapons program.

The rhetoric from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is that he wants to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth.

Then we have the megalomaniac from North Korea, Kim Jong-il, whose perverse view of the world is to launch nuclear weapons against the United States.

But we cannot forget our good friends the Russians and their new alliance with Hugo Chavez and his socialist government in Venezuela.

Open-source news reports state that Chavez is actively seeking Russian assistance in developing a nuclear energy program. That's another name for nuclear weapons.

Yet now we are told the Obama administration has decided to cancel the missile defense shield program for the Czech Republic and Poland ["President: Missile decision not about Russians," Sept. 21].

If I were living in Eastern Europe, I would say, "You can't trust the United States." Why would they?

The Polish tabloid Fakt declared on its front page: "Betrayal! The U.S. sold us to Russia and stabbed us in the back."

I understand politics, but for the Obama administration to openly abandon our NATO allies in the midst of these growing threats is tantamount to gross negligence in protecting our national security interests.

I hope that the Obama administration realizes the error of its ways before it is too late.

In a 1948 speech, Omar Bradley said, "The way to win an atomic war is to make certain it never starts."

Therefore, it is in our best interest that this country be prepared to defend itself and its allies against adversaries bent on our total annihilation.

Clinton---the last word? (posted by leclare , Nov. 9, 2009 8:30 am)
Note that after Clinton supposedly gutted the military, we had enough strength to knock off Iraq's military in a few days, with almost no troops lost, and Rummy said we could easily handle two theatres of fighting. Who were our enemies after the wall came down? China had no yen to fight us, Russia had no money, N. Korea hadn't arisen, so who did we need to arm ourselves against? Oh yeah, 19 guys with (gasp) BOXCUTTERS. We needed more B-1 type bombers to fight BOXCUTTERS? Get real.

tpifos - Republican "means to an end" (posted by UberMensch , Nov. 7, 2009 8:27 pm)
You know, I couldn't "wrap my head" around why Bush would submit $1/2 Trillion budgets year after year coupled with cutting taxes. I kept thinking "that's nuts". I'm no economic wiz, but that's nuts. Al Greenspan officially told Bush the same thing. The only thing I can think is "starve the beast" whereby Bush/Cheney would ensure no sucessor officials could spend any thing on domestic programs considered "social". Scorched earth. Rather "cut throat" and side affect, it killed the economy. Insane.

tipfos, please enlighten me... (posted by UberMensch , Nov. 7, 2009 8:20 pm)
proven methods of economic recovery? What might those be? The Republican's answer to any economic issue is "cut taxes". I guess that works sometimes, and was somewhat wise back when Republicans were true fiscal conservatives. How do you describe the Republicans from 1996 - 2006? They cut taxes and then went on wild spending sprees (for Iraq). I describe that as sucking up to a simple minded base that wanted to avoid civic responsiblity and they wanted their red meat with war (kill someone anyone).

they've made the economy worse & continue to propose policies that defy proven methods to economic recovery. Show me one decision this administration has made in the past year that has been successful.
