Jackets sputter way to easy victory

High school football: James Monroe at King George

Date published: 11/7/2009

It wasn't the result of James Monroe's 50-0 win last night against King George that had Jackets coach Rich Serbay worried.

But the path JM took to victory wasn't what he hoped for, and certainly not one the Jackets (7-2, 5-1) can follow next week in their final regular season game, a showdown with Battlefield District rival Courtland.

"It worries me. We play like that in the playoffs, and we're going to struggle," he said. "We've got too many athletes to struggle like that."

The Jackets were never threatened last night, thanks to a defense that completely controlled King George (2-7, 1-5). The Foxes managed just two first downs and 12 rushing yards.

But--besides a 41-point big-play outburst in the second quarter--the JM offense had its own hiccups and missteps.

JM was stopped on the King George 6 on its first possession and punted two other times in a 2-0 first quarter.

"It was the ugliest first quarter I've seen in a long time," Serbay said. "They were blitzing us, they had stunts I thought we were prepared for, but they just took it to us."

JM quarterback Farkeem French led a second-quarter outburst that put the Jackets comfortably ahead. He ran two touchdowns in, threw two scoring passes and returned a punt 51 yards in the period.

But the JM running game averaged less than four yards per carry in the game, the second straight week the Jackets sputtered on the ground.

"I think we got things going a little bit toward the end," JM lineman Will Campbell said. "We've got a great set of running backs. We're going to get it going eventually."
