Lacy's TD reception carries Cyclones over Devils

High school football: Eastern View at Culpeper

On fourth and 9 from Culpeper's 30-yard line, Eastern View quarterback Simon Pendleton heaved up a long pass.

With less than 5 minutes to play in regulation and Eastern View trailing by five, the balance of the game, along with football bragging rights in Culpeper, were up for grabs.

Eastern View receiver Carl Lacy pulled in the ball and ran for the touchdown, giving Eastern View a 20-19 win, their second this season over cross-county rivals Culpeper.

"I told [Pendleton] 'just put it on me and I'll get to it,'" Lacy said. "Once I did my route and the defender turned around, I knew I had it."

Pendleton hit Lacy in stride and the receiver had only a few yards to go for the game-winning touchdown.

The Blue Devils tried to muster one last drive, but came up short on a fourth and inches inside Cyclone territory.

Eastern View's defense came up with several key stops on the night, none more important than a 2-point conversion attempt and a fourth-and-goal stop from inside the 1-yard line in the third quarter.

Eastern View coach Greg Hatfield was pleased with how his team kept playing when Culpeper seemed to grab the upper hand.

"Our defense felt challenged," Hatfield said. "There has been a lot said about how our defense can't play physical and they couldn't stop the run but I thought we did a great job of making stops when we had to make stops."

Not every team can claim two victories over its rival, but for Eastern View to take both wins--and to do it in such dramatic fashion--will add to this young rivalry.

"[It's] a good rivalry," Hatfield said. "In a game like this, you throw out records because both teams will play well."

Culpeper coach Mike Williams was left searching for words after the loss.

Culpeper held Eastern View scoreless for two full quarters before allowing the go-ahead touchdown.
