King George added to H1N1 shot lineup

A new swine flu clinic has been scheduled for students in King George County.

The clinic will be held tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m. at King George High. Dr. John Petrasky, director of the Rappahannock Area Health District, said yesterday that he will ship King George at least 800 doses of the vaccine.

The King George clinic is in addition to two clinics scheduled for Thursday. A clinic beginning at 9 a.m. at St. William of York Catholic School in Stafford County will receive 300 doses, Petrasky said. A clinic at Caroline High School, beginning at 5 p.m., will receive 1,100 doses.

All three clinics will receive both the injectable and nasal mist varieties, Petrasky said.

Fells appointed to fill Caroline school post

The Caroline County School Board last night appointed former board member Valerie Fells to fill the seat vacated by Fred Peatross.

Peatross, 75, who took office in January 2008, resigned Nov. 1. He cited health problems as his reason for stepping down.

"My back is in such bad shape and getting to the point where I can't walk," Peatross said yesterday. "I'm not doing any justice for the people of the Reedy Church District serving like I'm serving. They are not getting the representation they deserve, so the best thing for me to do is get out."

After meeting in closed session last night, the board voted 3-0 to appoint Fells to fill the seat until a special election can be held. Tami Redding abstained, saying she disagreed with the process for filling the vacancy.

Fells held the seat before Peatross, but did not seek re-election in 2007.

UMW group holds abortion rights forum

The University of Mary Washington's chapter of Voices For Planned Parenthood will host a forum on abortion rights and other issues at 7:30 tonight in Great Hall.

It's titled "Pro Faith, Pro Choice" and will feature four speakers--two Presbyterian pastors, a rabbi and a program assistant for the Center for Health and Gender Equity in Washington. All are abortion rights supporters.
