Federal debt could threaten Constitution

Date published: 11/18/2009

The Constitution grants Congress the power of the purse. The president, elected officials, and military officers, to name a few, swear to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Here's an interesting question: What happens when Congress' power of the purse ultimately threatens the Constitution itself--namely, by threatening to drive the nation into financial subservience to foreign powers like China, which already owns so much of our debt, or by driving the republic into bankruptcy?

Would the president, military officers, and others sworn to protect and defend the Constitution be right to circumvent or even ignore congressional appropriations and rightfully claim they are protecting the Constitution?

With the massive deficits Congress and the current administration are running up now and their proclivity to spend more money we don't have, I wonder about that.

This might be a good question for constitutional scholars and the Supreme Court very soon.

One thing's for sure: Our Constitution, our republic, and our way of life are under immense threat if we continue to borrow to pay for our uncontrolled spending.

At what point will China and others holding our IOUs step forward and say, "Do what I tell you or we won't buy any more of your debt"?

Bad news does not improve with age, and this is very bad news for all of us.

bhaas, I'm not angry (posted by brandonj , Nov. 20, 2009 12:07 am)
But I really didn't like the condescending tone you took in your email. What bearing does when I was born have on my comments about the ridiculousness of people suggesting returning to the 1950s. And I get a little tired of the racism that is so prevalent in this area and apparently on these posts. When people repeatedly bash Barrack Obama over spendig when they gave that idot Bush a free pass for 8 years, one has to wonder what is truly behind their outrage. In any event, I'm tired of this-good night.

brandon, I specifically (posted by True_Bob , Nov. 19, 2009 6:57 pm)
mentioned god-botherers. We both know that nothing bothers the supremely serene FSM. He's got the best heaven ever. Now I have to go put on my pirate vestments and indulge in noodly goodness. RAmen. www.venganza.org

1. I never said the current economical situation was ALL Mr. Obamas fault. You need to re-read my post. 2. I too went to college and earned a degree in engineering, but I do not think that makes me a genius. 3. I also had parents and grandparents and they lived through the great depression. So I, too, have heard many stories about the old days. 4. I reached the age of majority in 1959 so I saw a lot of things this country is not proud of in the 50's. Tell me something, what are you so angry about?

True_Bob, when you suggest that followers (posted by brandonj , Nov. 19, 2009 4:31 pm)
of religion not be allowed to vote, you aren't referring to Pastafarians are you? Because we all know that the Flying Spaghetti monster is the one true deity-the Great Spaghedeity. This nation was founded on Pastafarian Principles-Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were devoted followers. And it's a fact that those who don't believe in FSM will be cast into the lake of Marinara, where they will simmer over medium heat, being stirred occasionally for all time. So no problem if they can't vote...

Oh, and Haas, about the debt.. (posted by brandonj , Nov. 19, 2009 4:06 pm)
Grandma could also tell you how there was a national debt even then (WWII and Roosevelt's New Deal weren't free you know) and taxes were high. Just like the boom years of the 1980's and again in the 1990's there was debt. This isn't a new concept and if we can get everyone to pay their fair share of taxes the debt can be brought under control-especially if the economy rebounds. People need to stop running around yelling that the sky is falling. Things will get better and it isn't all O's fault.
