A man shot near a Westmoreland County school yesterday remained in critical condition last night at Mary Washington Hospital.
According to Westmoreland Sheriff's Maj. John Hoover, Tyrell Brown was shot shortly before noon at the Cabin Ford subdivision about three-tenths of a mile from Cople Elementary School on State Route 202 near Hague.
Hoover said a suspect in the shooting fled on foot. The school was locked down for about two hours as deputies and Virginia State Police officers searched for the suspect with dogs in nearby woods, Hoover said.
Brown was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Fredericksburg. The school reopened about 2 p.m. in time for its regular dismissal, Hoover said.
The suspect remained at large last night, Hoover said. He declined last night to identify the suspect.
