William R. Whitby Jr.
William Ransford "Whimpy" Whitby Jr., 78, of Spotsylvania County passed away Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Whitby was born June 6, 1931, in Prince George County. His parents and five siblings moved to Caroline Street in Fredericksburg, where they lived for many years.
He attended James Monroe High School, where he was a basketball star. He then served in the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of engineer first class. After his discharge, he went to work for Krafft Service Corp. and eventually became a business partner.
Mr. Whitby was a member of City Dock River Rats and Hicks Wednesday Dinner Club.
He also enjoyed hunting at A.P. Hill with his special friends. He will be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing and devotion to his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Oliver Whitby; their children and their spouses, Denise Thomas and her husband, Alan, Craig Whitby and his wife, Kathy, Chris Brascher, and her husband, Matt, Lisa Brooks and Bill Whitby; nine grandchildren, Neil Adlon, Gina Perry, Michael Whitby, Stephen Brooks, Corbin Brascher Cody Whitby, David Brooks, Clay Whitby and Jonathon Whitby; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois and Josephine.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mac; and three sisters, Peggy, Lucille and Mabel.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. Daniel Ledford officiating. Entombment will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
