Health care reform makes sparks

Date published: 11/24/2009

POLITICALLY UNHEALTHY

MEMBERS of Congress from competitive states and dis- tricts support the Pelosi health care bill at their political peril. A Zogby International/O'Leary Report poll released last week found that most voters in in-play jurisdictions (as determined by political maven Charlie Cook) were disinclined to back a senator or congressman who favors the legislation.

Some 49 percent of likely voters (those who voted in 2008) in states with competitive 2010 Senate races pronounced themselves "much less likely" to vote to re-elect their senator if he or she backed the House plan, versus just 25 percent who said they were "much more likely" to vote for such a senator. Another 5 percent were "somewhat less likely" to back a pro-Pelosi bill senator.

The gap in congressional districts was even wider: Fully 54 percent of voters were "much less likely" to support a congressman who voted for the Pelosi measure versus 19 percent who were "much more likely."

But never fear

THE AP IS HERE

Like most U.S. newspapers, The Free Lance-Star gets the bulk of its national and international news from The Associated Press, which on most matters and in most stories reports well and fairly. However, the lead paragraph of our Sunday A1 story on health care by the AP's David Espo said this:

"WASHINGTON--Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united last night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama."

Our view: (1) "Historic" the legislation would be, but so are plagues, pestilences, and planetary asteroid strikes, in which case; (2) Republicans may not be "eager" so much to "punish" anyone as to spare posterity a bankrupting, freedom-gutting monstrosity that would rob millions of high-quality health care.

That's right, what we just wrote shouldn't be the lead of a professedly objective news story. But what Mr. Espo wrote shouldn't be, either.

Many issues in Washington are... (posted by bhaas , Nov. 25, 2009 12:23 pm)
important; some even critical, but in my view that does not stop the "collision" of two vastly different political ideologies that always seems to trump serious negotiation to reach a solution that is best for all concerned.

Maybe so, bhaas (posted by True_Bob , Nov. 25, 2009 7:57 am)
but I think this issue is more important than the usual childish behavior. It certainly isn't like the Rs believe in fiscal responsibility in the least. Their goal is not good legislation, it's to stick it to Obama and the Ds.

A spectacle created... (posted by bhaas , Nov. 25, 2009 6:12 am)
for electoral advantage? Methinks both political entities participate in that game pretty effectively.

FLS hasn't been paying (posted by True_Bob , Nov. 24, 2009 8:27 pm)
attention. The Greying Old Party is intent on making this a political defeat for Obama. They've said as much. They aren't contributing to discussion, they are trying to create a spectacle for electoral advantage. It's an awfully cynical ploy, since in the end, human lives are in play.

Because the monstrosity that we have (posted by kimcmitch , Nov. 24, 2009 10:07 am)
is so much better? Guess the FLS has not received their annual renewal rate increase.
