Cantor talks about the economy Date published: 12/3/2009
With President Barack Obama slated to hold a jobs summit today, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor unveiled his own economic proposals in a speech yesterday.
Cantor, a Henrico Republican who represents Culpeper and Orange counties, wants a "no-cost jobs plan" that freezes federal spending, eases regulations that might inhibit small businesses from growth and eschews any tax increases. In a conference call with reporters, Cantor decried the stimulus spending that has been part of Democrats' efforts to improve the economy. "The incredible amount of spending that we have seen from the congressional majority has now saddled this nation and our children with unprecedented amounts of debt," Cantor said. Cantor laid out his plan in a speech to the Heritage Foundation. In it, he called on Democrats to avoid tax increases until the unemployment rate drops below 5 percent, according to excerpts of his speech released by his office. He also wants to reform the unemployment system to help workers find jobs, and wants the Obama administration to move forward with free-trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea and Panama. Cantor also called for giving bank regulators "incentives to deal responsibly with banks and their borrowers" to help head off a looming commercial real-estate problem. Chelyen Davis: 540/368-5028
This article was written from a press release from Cantor's office and contains the same generalities he has made countless times. The FLS unfortunately felt no urge to ask him for specifics, such as the exact programs (defense?Medicare?) that would be affected by a budget freeze or whether he was aware that the nation was "saddled with unprecedented levels of debt" befoe this Congress even began. Your readers deserve better.
And I'm a hardcore Republican. This guy has looked terrible in every television interview since last year's election. Rinse and repeating the same old "talking points" that we are used to hearing from politicians. I've yet to hear anything constructive come out of this guy's mouth other than spewing the Kool-Aid. I wouldn't vote for a Democrat (other than Mark Warner who was the best Governor in my lifetime who I didn't vote for when he was running for the VA Governorship), but I won't support Cantor.
or Cantor sounds like he is clueless to me. Does he think the
current State Employment system is a failure? If so.. let's
hear some specifics.
More free trade? Won't that result in MORE jobs going
overseas?
"incentives"? is he advocating "subsidies" for banks
holding bad commercial loans?
this guy is a "leader" of the Republicans?
at least he didn't repeat the canard about giving tax cuts to
the wealthy so they can "create" jobs..
