Armory hosts model train show for 12th year Date published: 12/10/2009
BY CRAIG SCHULIN There is something so satisfying about seeing the look of fascination on a child's face--and many adults' faces as well--when they gaze at a model train display. Perhaps it's their amazement that something as large as a freight train is condensed into a much smaller version they can control. But it seems that doesn't completely explain it. There are toddlers who haven't a clue that large, rumbling diesel engines ply the tracks of the larger world, who still gleefully lock on to the sight of a model train as it moves and puffs along its tiny track. Maybe the appeal is something different for everyone who loves model trains. This weekend the Rappahannock Model Railroad Club will be holding its 12th annual Show at the Fredericksburg National Guard Armory. "Model trains are truly an experience for the entire family to participate in," said Jim Kerley, the club's president. "In today's world of video games and texting, model trains and their displays can bring together fathers and sons. Mothers get in on the fun by helping with the accessories of the display," said Kerley. The show at the armory will include a 30- by 40-foot space for the members' displays of their O-gauge trains. Past shows have had up to 4,000 attendees admiring the work and dedication of the 40 members from the area that belong to the club. Additionally, there will be 24 vendors on site selling for beginners and novice enthusiasts alike. "This show is our main fund-raising event," said Kerley. "But throughout the year we hold shows that benefit local community groups such as hospice care and Hope House." And there is no denying the connection of model trains and Christmastime. This weekend's gathering promises to help further bring out the magic of the season.
