GCC to highlight its engineering program

Germanna Community College will host an information meeting Thursday on its associate of science in engineering program and its link to the University of Virginia's engineering program.

The meeting, at Germanna's Fredericksburg campus, will begin with a 5 p.m. reception in the Workforce Building lobby. Four speakers will begin at 6 p.m., and a question-and-answer session will be at 7:30 p.m.

Speakers include James Aylor, U.Va.'s dean of engineering and director of the Engineers PRODUCED in Virginia program; James Groves, U.Va. associate dean of engineering; and Mark Gibson, assistant professor of engineering at Germanna Community College and a longtime NASA engineer.

PRODUCED is an acronym for Providing Undergraduate Connections to Engineering Education in Virginia. The program is an outreach of U.Va.'s School of Engineering and Applied Science that takes undergraduate engineering studies to community colleges in the state.

Germanna started participating in the cooperative program with U.Va. last fall and recently was accredited to award the associate of science in engineering degree.
