The news regarding the failed Christmas bombing caused me to review my own recent air travel experience.

At the Richmond airport, I was sent through full-body scanning (I'm 80, a native-born American).

Given the level of business, I concluded that the Transportation Security Administration employees were bored, or a new employee was in training.

At Dallas, there was no security because my arriving and departing flights were from the same concourse.

Are employees of the retail outlets subjected to daily searches when they report for work? Are delivery persons and hundreds of boxes of merchandise examined? Doubtful, since only 20 percent of air freight is examined.

On my return through Salt Lake City, I passed through security as quickly as I would pass through a Metro turnstile on a Sunday afternoon.

The best thing I could say about TSA is that their methods are inconsistent.
