Dorothy M. VanCleve

Dorothy Mae VanCleve, 80, of Fredericksburg went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 1, 2010.

Miss VanCleve was born in North Liberty, Pa., to Hiram and Lois VanCleve. She graduated from Houghton College in 1951 and later received her master's from East Tennessee State.

Miss VanCleve was a teacher in North Carolina, Tennessee and Indiana. Her teaching career lasted 43 years. She was loved by her students and prayed for them, and still had contact with many of them. She remembered special things about each student.

In 1995, she moved to the Fredericksburg area, and that's when Linda McWhirt became her "adopted daughter." Linda took wonderful care of her.

In 1997, she became a Chaplain with Market Place Ministries and served at McLane Mid-Atlantic for 12 years, retiring in December 2009.

She is survived by her brothers, Harold VanCleve of Warsaw, Ind., and Donald VanCleve, and his wife, Deanna, of Longwood, Fla.; and her sisters, Ruth Griswold and her husband, Marshall, of Warsaw, Ind., and Lois Strum of Hague, N.Y., and Fredericksburg. She also is survived by six nieces, Terrie Sahagun of Syracuse, Ind., Kathy Gast of Claypool, Ind., Barb Kiphart of Warsaw, Gena Kendall of Warsaw, Laurie Williamson of Warsaw, and Norma Strum of Fredericksburg; and two nephews, Tim Strum of New Brighton, Pa., and Rich Strum of Ticonderoga, N.Y; 12 great-nieces, four great- nephews and one great-great-niece; and her McLane Mid-Atlantic Family.

She spent most of her life serving the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and small groups in the church and as a chaplain.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, at Riverside First Church of God, with the Rev. Gerald Rodgers and the Rev. Matthew Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 3 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Memorials may be made to Market Place Ministries, 2001 West Plano Parkway, Suite 3200, Plano, Texas 75075; or to Mary Washington Hospice, 2012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.
