SANDWICH CONTEST PICKS A WINNER

James Monroe finally has a sandwich to call his own— and it is No. 21 on the Virginia Deli’s menu.

The downtown Fredericksburg restaurant and the James Monroe Museum & Memorial Library held a contest recently to pick a sandwich representing the nation’s fifth president.

The winner, a variation of the Philly cheese steak, commemorates Monroe’s time as a delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

BAKERY TO OPEN IN TOWN OF ORANGE

Not Just Desserts Bakery will open at the end of the month at 221 East Church St. in the town of Orange. It specializes in both traditional and nontraditional cakes and cupcakes, and will serve coffee selected with help from Orange County Roasters.

Hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and patio seating will be available.
