King George hosts annual art show with 96 artists participating Date published: 6/24/2010
BY CRAIG SCHULIN With roots stretching back 50 years ago to shows put on by the local PTA and Women's Club, the biennial King George Art Show has grown tremendously since it was first held in 1971. This year's show features more than 300 works by 96 artists from four states in the mid-Atlantic region. "We have lots of well-known artists from around the area participating," said Carrol Morgan, chairperson of the King George Art Guild. "A lot of them have been part of the show from very early on." There are two parts to the show--a judged competition and a clothesline sale. The judge for this event will be Rob McAdams, president of the board of directors for Richmond's 1708 Gallery. He will be presenting an overall best in show award as well as awards in the categories of fine art, photography and crafts. The clothesline sale part of the show allows artists to bring in pieces that will not be judged in the competition, but will be for sale. This show is being dedicated to the memory of John Shaw, a King George artist who died in January of this year. Shaw was well-known for his wildlife scenes. The event, put on by the King George Art Guild, is completely run by volunteers. "We have over 100 people who dedicate their time to making this a successful show," said Morgan. "We couldn't make it work without them."
