GPS helps Elsie Belman track down stolen limo in Alexandria Date published: 6/24/2010
BY BILL FREEHLING A global positioning system inside her stolen Chevrolet Suburban limousine helped Elsie Belman track down the thieves this past weekend in Alexandria. Belman runs Elsie Slyman Belman Stretch Limousine Service, which is based in Stafford County but does a lot of its work in the Washington area. She keeps some of her limos in Alexandria for easy access. Belman purchased a GPS system for each of her limos so she could check on their locations at all times. She can monitor that through a password-protected website called Enterprisegps.com. Belman signed onto the site about 7 p.m. this past Saturday and was surprised to see that the 2008 Suburban, which was supposed to be parked in Alexandria, was on the move. The vehicle's recent history showed that it was turned on between about 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. before taking a seven-hour break. "I knew nobody was supposed to be driving it," Belman said. She called Alexandria police and showed them how to monitor the vehicle's location through the Web. Police tracked the limo down and caught it about 8 p.m. in Alexandria. Belman said the two thieves inside got out and ran; one was caught and the other got away. Information about the suspects wasn't available. The limo wasn't damaged, Belman said. ...make use of the wetbar and other amenities in the limo? It is wonderful that she got it back undamaged.
