Miss America comes back to Miss Fredericksburg pageant Date published: 7/31/2010
By SARA MITCHELL Fredericksburg Fair President Bennie Brooks knew what was going through the heads of the seven Miss Fredericksburg Fair contestants last night. "A lot of ladies are vying for Miss Fredericksburg 2010, and I'm sure a lot of them have dreams of going to the Miss America pageant," Brooks told the crowd before the pageant began. A chance at the national title now seems possible in a town that saw a former Miss Fredericksburg Fair, Caressa Cameron, go on to become Miss America this January. Last night's Miss Fredericksburg 2010, Christina Beth Nicholson from Locust Grove, said God answered her prayers to take the crown. "I feel humbled," Nicholson, a 19-year-old at the University of Mary Washington said. She has placed first runner-up in the pageant last summer and second runner-up in 2008. "I was so nervous," Nicholson said of the pre-pageant interview, adding that she knew she had to "rock it onstage." Nicholson had known Cameron from previous local pageants--she has competed since she was 8--and has always looked up to her, even before she became Miss America. "It was cool to see her win," she said. The crowd cheered on the girls through the casual wear, formal wear and platform presentation. It also watched Cameron come back to the stage where she was crowned Miss Fredericksburg Fair in 2005. She opened up the pageant singing "Dream a Dream" from "Les Miserables." "You have no idea whose dreams are beginning to come true just because they had the opportunity to walk cross this stage," Cameron said to the crowd. The Spotsylvania County native, who graduated from Massaponax High, was welcomed with open arms by the entire town, and she called the support from her hometown overwhelming. "They are friendly--people want to say hi," Cameron said. "That's what people in a community like Fredericksburg do." Cameron came back to Fredericksburg early to spend time in the community. She was honored yesterday afternoon at a luncheon at the Inn at Fredericksburg Square by State Sen. Edd Houck and Gary Skinner, chairman of the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors "I will continue to try to make you proud," Cameron said at the luncheon.

do you watch footall or boxing or wrestling etc? Why? What's so important about celebrating being the best at kicking and carrying a piece of leather from one place to another..or being the best at beating someone up or pinning someone to the floor?
Did you ever see a beauty queen "au naturel?"? It takes hard work to be beautiful and gracious and refined etc. Ever see a beauty queen firs thing in the morning? Anyway, lighten up and be happy!
But why do we have beauty contests? What kind of accomplishment is being pretty? It would be nice if the money time and energy spent on these stupid pageants were spent on educating women and celebrating educational and professional achievements. As Judge Judy said, "beauty fades, dumb is forever!"
Why there wasn't a picture of the winner. Miss Nicholson is probably thinking the same thing.
It's a proven fact that the entire community is quite proud of Caressa Cameron and her journey to the Miss America title. However, the other young ladies who competed in the most recent Fredericksburg Fair Pageant have dreams of winning just like Caressa, and the oversight of a photo of the 2010 pagent winner within today's paper has to be a bit deflating to Miss Nicholson, the young lady who takes over the crown of Miss Fredericksburg Fair. It's a shame that no photo of her accomplishment is included here!
