Caroline church gives free prom dresses Date published: 3/24/2011
The Cinderella's Closet at Concord Baptist Church in Caroline County is opening its doors again tomorrow for girls who want to pick out free dresses for proms or formal dances. The church held its annual dress giveaway last Saturday, but only 45 girls took part. The church has more than 200 dresses left; many of them are brand new, with tags still on them, said Diane Boone, one of the "fairy godmothers" who puts the event together. That's why the godmothers decided to hold a second giveaway this year. They're inviting girls from the Fredericksburg area to come to the church from 5 to 8 p.m. The social hall is set up with racks of dresses and tables of accessories, and helpers are available to assist the girls in making their selections. At Saturday's event, students from Caroline, Hanover, Spotsylvania, King George, Westmoreland, Fredericksburg, Lorton and Essex schools attended. The organizers gave away gift cards to Target and tickets to the Caroline High School prom. Pastor David Upshaw talked with the girls and their families. Cinderella's Closet received many donations of dresses, accessories and money this year, said Jeannie Ball, one of the organizers. The group was able to purchase four new heavy-duty racks for display, along with the gift cards and dresses.
