Man charged with arson
Police say man set fire to a home in Stafford County.

Date published: 5/28/2011

A Stafford County man was arrested today and charged with setting fire to a home near Hope Springs Marina, police said.

Daniel Martin, 47, has been charged with felony arson, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and being drunk in public, said Maj. David Decatur of the Stafford Sheriff’s Office.

Martin is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

The fire destroyed the home at 594 Hope Road near Stafford Courthouse. Nobody was injured, police and fire officials say.

Martin has lived in a detached garage/apartment next to the house for about two years, Decatur said. He had argued with a resident of the home this morning. Police were called, but no one was arrested.

Nobody was in the home when it caught fire, Decatur said.

A neighbor first noticed the fire, Decatur said. He went to the garage to warn Martin, who admitted to starting the fire and threatened to kill the man, police said.

The neighbor called 911 after rescuing a dog from the home.

Police arrived at about 3:30 p.m., Decatur said.

Sheriff’s deputies apprehended Martin at about 4 p.m. They used a Taser while subduing him, Decatur said.

“He continued to fight after being handcuffed,” he said.

Neighbors reported hearing gunfire before and during the fire, Decatur said. He said Martin did not brandish a gun at police or firefighters.

Firefighters searched the burning home for occupants, Stafford Fire and Rescue Executive Officer Mark Doyle said.

Crews left the home after hearing that a man in an adjacent garage had a weapon, Doyle said.

As of last night, police had not found a gun, though ammunition was in the house, Decatur said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control after the suspect was arrested, Decatur said. Two adults and one child lived in the home, Doyle said.

Hope Road was closed for about 2 hours because of the incident.
