Stafford County native John A. "Butch" Beverly was recently named to the Hampden-Sydney College athletic hall of fame.

Beverly, a Stafford High School graduate, starred in baseball and football from 1970-73. He was a four-year starter at cornerback and a three-time pick as all-Mason Dixon Conference.

He led the Tigers in interceptions in 1971 and '72 and helped his team win three straight conference titles (1970-72). H-SC allowed just 3.4 points per game in 1970 and 2.8 in a 10-0 season in 1971, leading the nation's small colleges.

Beverly, who now lives in Richmond, was also a four-year starter in center field for the baseball team.

Hampden-Sydney's induction ceremony will be held Nov. 5. Others in the class of 2011 include former lacrosse star Richard "Chamie" Burroughs, ex-football standout Jeff Woody and former athletic director and head football, tennis and golf coach Joe Bush.

TRACK AND FIELD

Clemson junior April Sinkler (Brooke Point) earned her ninth career All-America honor by finishing eighth in the women's long jump (21-2) at last week's NCAA championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was also 14th (41-6) in the triple jump (an event won by teammate Patricia Mamona for the second straight year) and 15th in the high jump (5-9).

AWARDS

Recent Ferrum graduate Cara Jacobs (Liberty) was recently named USA South Athletic Conference Woman of the Year after earning all-conference honors in lacrosse three times and compiling a 3.97 grade-point average. She is now eligible for the NCAA National Woman of the Year award.

Jacobs was also named to the USA South's all-academic team, which requires a 3.0 GPA for the school year. Other local honorees include Christopher Newport linebacker Austin Bopp (Stafford), basketball forward Jessica Moore (Stafford) and field hockey player Emma Mehrabi (James Monroe), and Shenandoah lacrosse player Kenneth May (Liberty).
