A police raid involving federal authorities was conducted yesterday at 20 Sanford Ferry Court in Stafford County's Celebrate Virginia North development.

A neighbor said about a dozen police officers and squad cars arrived yesterday before 9 a.m. and were there much of the day collecting evidence from the home.

The Stafford Sheriff's Office was there in case it was needed for scene control, said department spokesman Bill Kennedy, but was not involved in the investigation. He declined to say what agency conducted the raid.

FBI spokeswoman Dee Rybiski said it did not involve the FBI. U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Peter Carr said he was unable to comment or provide any information about the case.

The property that was raided is owned by Kathleen D. McGrade, according to Stafford land records. She has owned the home since December 2009.

According to an Associated Press report, McGrade was dismissed this summer from her job with the U.S. State Department, where she was a contractor, after being accused of awarding millions in contracts to Washington-based Sterling Royale Group, a company run by her husband and daughter. The department also began an internal investigation.

A State Department spokeswoman said she didn't have any details about yesterday's raid in Stafford.
