An unidentified man shoots himself in car outside the Harrison Crossing Giant in Spotsylvania

UPDATE: The Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office released the following statement this morning:

"On November 13, 2011 at approximately 5:00pm, a 45 year old male accidentally fatally shot himself. The shooting occurred in front of the Giant Food Store in Harrison Crossing.

"The victim was in the driver seat of his vehicle waiting for his wife to return a movie. There were several children in the vehicle as well. At some point, the victim apparently went to unbuckle his seat and mistakenly hit the trigger of the handgun. The victim immediately told his wife that he had shot himself. The gun shot wound was in the area of the victimís hip.

"The first deputy arrived minutes after the initial 911 call and with other bystanders administered first aid. The victim was pronounced deceased at Mary Washington Hospital.


Man shoots himself outside Spotsy Giant

A man shot himself about 4:40 p.m. yesterday while in a car outside the Giant grocery store in Spotsylvania County's Harrison Crossing shopping center on State Route 3.

Spotsylvania authorities said the shooting appeared to be accidental.

The man was taken to Mary Washington Hospital; no information was available on his condition or identity.

Authorities said a child was in the car when the shooting occurred.

The store remained open this evening, and a worker there said she could not discuss the incident.
