Spotsy, Stafford get farmland grants

RICHMOND

--Gov. Bob McDonnell yesterday announced the distribution of $1.2 million in new farmland preservation grants.

The money will go to 13 localities, including Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.

Spotsylvania will get $110,952.46; Stafford will receive $66,093.

The grants are state matching funds through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The $1.2 million is quite a bit more than the $100,000 made available in the last fiscal year. Local governments must use the money to preserve farmland by using purchase of development rights programs. Those programs pay landowners to agree to permanently preserve their land by putting a perpetual conservation easement on it.
