What's good for business is good for the state?

Date published: 2/12/2012

During the summer, my daughter and I heard that Jimmy Buffett was coming to Northern Virginia.

Knowing that Jimmy always came to Nissan Pavilion, I started to look for tickets. It took a little while to find ticket information, because Nissan Pavilion is now named Jiffy Lube Live, which was a little confusing.

This incident was brought to mind recently when Gov. McDonnell made a statement to the effect that road money could be found not by raising taxes, but rather by selling the names of highways and roads ["State road names for sale?" Jan. 21].

Imagine Courthouse Road becoming L.A. Law Road, or White Oak Road being renamed Jersey Shore Road.

Confusion, yes; taxes, no!

Maybe building names could become good revenue sources. Perhaps Schlitz could financially help Stafford County rebuild Stafford High School. In return, the county could name the new building Schlitz Stafford High School. The abbreviation for it--SSHS--would have a sort of World War II ring to it.

Not to be outdone, Colonial Forge High School might become Coors Colonial Forge High School.

Spotsylvania schools also need money, and using Gov. McDonnell's idea they might choose a similar route. But wait, the school system isn't quite as liberal, and naming their buildings after alcohol is distasteful. They choose instead to beautify.

Think of it: Revlon Riverbend High School and Maybelline Massaponax High School.

These name changes might be good job makers, also. The confusion brought to locals and tourists would need to be alleviated by the installation of new road signs, maps, GPS info, and tour guides. All of this would require more workers, which would help lower unemployment.

Ah, good old capitalism. What is good for business is good for the USA!
