Edith Juanita Smith

Edith Juanita Smith, 80, of Fredericksburg passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Edith was born Sept. 26, 1931, in Washington, D.C., to Katherine and Charles Hinton. She moved to Falls Church and married her high school sweetheart, David Montgomery Smith, in 1951.

As mother to four children, Edie loved playing outside with them, inventing new games and playing card games.

She joined the workforce in the 1960s, sharing ownership of a beauty salon in Arlington, then was a successful employment counselor with Potomac Personnel.

Following David's retirement from the Arlington County Fire Department, they moved to Colonial Beach, where they loved woodworking, gardening, and fun weekends with the grandchildren. After her husband's death from cancer, she moved to Fredericksburg to begin a new life of traveling while making new friends. Edie found love when she met Bob and while they had a short time together, they made the most of enjoying each other's company.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Eichinger; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Jim Jakubowski; son and daughter-in-law David C. and Jane Smith; daughter-in-law Christine Smith; grandchildren Kerry Gehring, Amy Powers, Nora Smith, Becky Rosati and Geoffrey Smith; and great-grandchildren Madison, Jack, Riley and Hayden. Her children William Montgomery and Patricia Lee pre-deceased her.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Va. 22042, where a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.
