Doris Beddow

Doris Evelyn Hitchins Beddow, 88, of Charlottesville, entered into eternal rest Saturday, July 7, 2012. She passed peacefully at home with her husband, Frank, at her side.

She was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Hazel L. Hitchins of Middletown, R.I. Frank and Doris Beddow would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Aug. 1, 2012.

Doris worked at the telephone company in Charlottesville during the late 1940s. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher, and she was a volunteer at the hospital in Fredericksburg during the 1980s. Doris was also responsible for naming the Fairview Swim Club in Charlottesville.

After the birth of her first daughter, Doris put aside any thought of a public career in order to be at home and devote herself to being a beloved wife and mother, at which she excelled.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Kathleen Beddow Simpson and husband Mark of Ruckersville, and Janine Beddow Armstrong and husband Bill of Lexington Park, Md.; a sister, Marie Hitchens Sampson and husband Fred of Wasilla, Alaska; a sister-in-law, Caroyl Beddow Gooch of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, James Fulton Beddow and wife Margaret of Ruckersville; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at the First Presbyterian Church on Park Street in Charlottesville with the Rev. David G. Forney officiating.
