Weight Watchers helps food bank

Weight Watchers in Fredericksburg will host a "Lose for Good Open House on Saturday to benefit the Fredericksburg Food Bank.

The event is set for 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at Weight Watchers in Eagle Village, 1279 Jefferson Davis Highway.

The event will include prizes, refreshments, weight-loss success stories, demonstrations, body-mass-index measurements for those attending, recipes and more.

People are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to benefit the food bank.

Robotics team demonstration set

At the Thursday meeting of the Fredericksburg PC Users Group, Dave Shotwell and the Commonwealth Governor's School Robotics Team will demonstrate their Kilroy Robot, which will be entered in a state competition.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Falmouth Fire House on Butler Road. Refreshments will be served and the meeting is open to the public.

museum will open textile exhibits

The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center will open two contemporary textile exhibits this fall.

"Community Artist Series: Fiber Art" opens in the Mansard Gallery on Friday. It exhibits work of several local fiber artists.

"Quilt National," a traveling exhibition on loan from the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, opens Oct. 5 in the historic Council Chamber.

Virginia state parks hold service days

Virginia's state parks, including three in the Fredericksburg region, will hold events Tuesday as part of a National Day of Service commemorating Sept. 11.

Lake Anna State Park's observance is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon. The park is seeking volunteers to help with cleaning pathways and the waterline, as well as trimming around pathways and clearing debris.

The park will provide gloves, trash bags and safety gear.

The project at Westmoreland State Park is a cleanup of the picnic area and beaches of the Potomac River from 2-4 p.m.

The event is open to all park visitors. Call 804/493-8821.

Caledon State Park will hold a beach cleanup and hot dog roast 4:30-5:30 p.m. Volunteers and park staff will clean shoreline debris, then build a campfire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows.

St. stephen's holds blood drive

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 115 N. East St., Culpeper will hold an American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday from 12:30 to 6 p.m. on the third floor above the Culpeper Food Closet.
