The Virginia Railway Express' board has selected Doug Allen as its new CEO.
The move became official Friday after the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission endorsed the selection to run the commuter rail system.
"The Operations Board felt that Mr. Allen's background and his previous experience made him a perfect fit for moving VRE ahead in the years to come," VRE board Chairman Wally Covington said in a statement.
Allen, who has 30 years of experience in the public and private transportation industry, most recently was the vice president and chief development officer at Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Austin, Texas, according to VRE.
The Texas transportation authority has operated the Austin region's public transportation since 1985, in the form of buses and commuter rail, according to its website. The authority also helps commuters form and find vanpools and carpools.
Allen said he plans to help drive forward VRE's long-range plans, which include opening a station in Spotsylvania County.
Allen replaces Dale Zehner, who left his position in June. Richard Dalton, the director of rail equipment and services, served as VRE's interim CEO since July 1.
