Vernon W. Coble

Vernon W. Coble, 94, of Spotsylvania County passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Coble was born March 29, 1918, to the late Shelly and Janie Coble in Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of Chancellor Baptist Church. Mr. Coble was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had retired as chief of police from the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Coble had been a member of the Benjamin B. French Masonic Lodge in Washington, D.C., since 1944, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners and Daylight Lodge No. 1752 in Fredericksburg.

He is survived by his sister Emily Erlebach of Bath, Maine; his adopted sister, Mildred Goodwin, of Orange County; his niece, Linda Land and her husband, Clyde Land, of Climax, N.C.; his adopted grandchildren, Steven and Sallie Druiett; his adopted great-grandchildren Anne, Eli and Katherine Druiett; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Mae Coble; his wife of nearly 69 years, Lorel Paytes Coble; his brother, Charlie Coble; and sisters Mildred Hemphill, Novella Merrit and Virginia Colton, all of Greensboro, N.C.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Daylight Lodge No. 1752, 803 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401; or to Chancellor Baptist Church, 11324 Gordon Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.
