Mrs. Joan Anthonette Handy, 75, of Blairs died at her residence on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, after a short decline in health.
Mrs. Handy was born in Arlington on Nov. 20, 1936, a daughter of the late Frederick Joseph Biggs Sr. and Mildred Ficklin Biggs.
Mrs. Handy was a longtime member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Chancellorsville before moving to Danville and joining Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was married to the late Gerald H. Handy, who died Nov. 26, 2011.
She is survived by her children, Tim J. Handy of Spotsylvania County, Kevin P. Handy of Woodbridge, Marybeth Schaefer of Ruffin, N.C., and James R. Mellott of Spotsylvania; one brother, Frederick J. Biggs Jr. of Felton, Del.; and a sister, Suzanne M. Riddle of Ruther Glen. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Anthony Marques officiating. A visitation will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. at the church. Graveside services will held at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fredericksburg.
