Doctors' offices: Show some common courtesy!

Today was it! What is the deal with going to a doctor's office only to sit for up to an hour, approaching the receptionist several times, and then finally be told, "Oh, the doctor is running behind."

Really? I would have never known.

Did she not know that when I checked in? Does she not pay attention to the fact that the waiting room is getting fuller by the minute? Does she even care?

I work for a living, which means that I have to take time off to go to the doctor. I wonder how the doctors would feel if they were treated this way.

If you cancel less than 24 hours ahead you get charged. If you decide to go to an emergency room, God forbid, you get to wait there also, and they charge you even more.

Here's an idea: Show some courtesy! If the doc is running behind, have the common sense to ask the person checking in if they would prefer to reschedule rather than wait.

Maybe charging my hourly rate to sit in these doctors' offices would get some attention. Perhaps complaining to my insurance company will make a difference.

Maybe, just maybe, someone with a brain will read this and think it is a good idea to show this courtesy as a new office procedure. Or maybe I'll check with my insurance company about switching doctors. Anybody know a doctor with a short wait time?
