Memorial Sept. 23 at K.G. Landfill

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, residents will gather in front of the King George Landfill to dedicate a memorial to service members who were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq--then had some of their partial remains incinerated like medical waste and dumped in the landfill.

Guest speakers will be Leslie Smith, a retired Army captain and Wounded Warrior spokesperson, and Gari-Lynn Smith, a New Jersey widow whose questions about the treatment of her husband's body led to the discovery of Dover Air Force Base's treatment of partial remains. At least 274 service members were affected.

The bronze plaque reads: "For honor, respect and in memory of those American service members, known but to God, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We are ever grateful. The citizens of King George County and a grateful nation."

The service will be held at the entrance to the landfill, which is on Birchwood Creek Drive, off State Route 3.
