Two young Woodbridge men were arrested Tuesday following a high-speed chase that ended with a crash and a short foot pursuit in Central Park in Fredericksburg, police said.
Stafford County sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said Deputy Chris Neuhard was on routine patrol at 1:17 a.m. when he saw a Honda Accord heading east on State Route 3 near Ferry Road in Stafford.
Neuhard checked the license plate of the vehicle and learned that it had been reported stolen in Prince William County.
Neuhard followed the vehicle toward King George County for about five minutes until he was joined by 1st Sgt. Lorenzo Beltran. Both officers then turned on their emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle near the area of the former Renaissance Faire.
The driver responded by turning around and heading back west on Route 3 at a high rate of speed, Kennedy said. The Honda took the ramp leading to the Blue and Gray Parkway and continued on Route 3 into Fredericksburg and past Interstate 95. By that time, city officers and state troopers had responded to assist the Stafford officers.
Kennedy said the driver then made a sharp right turn onto Carl D. Silver Parkway but lost control of the vehicle and hit a median and some landscaping. The driver and passenger got out of the vehicle and ran as Neuhard chased them on foot, yelling for them to stop.
The men ran behind the nearby Patient First building, where Beltran caught the driver and took him into custody. City officers apprehended the passenger a short distance away.
Marvin Reyes, 21, and German Velasquez, 19, were both charged with possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Reyes was also charged with felony eluding, reckless driving and driving on a revoked license.
Both men were placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
