George Moerman Sr.

George D. Moerman Sr., 81, of Springfield died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at his daughter's home.

Mr. Moerman attended St. John's University, where he studied law. Upon graduation he became an attorney in private practice with his father, Sidney Moerman. On June 17, 1955, he married Joyce Patricia Schmitz in El Paso, Texas.

After serving in the U.S. Army he joined the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Moerman retired as assistant director of loan policy for the Veterans Administration in 1989, after 33 years of service.

Survivors include his children, George D. Moerman Jr. and wife Rose M. of Springfield, Jennifer Purcell and husband Daniel F. Sr. of Stafford County and Allyson Moerman and husband John S. Whitten of Stafford; seven grandchildren, Katrina Rollins and her husband, Tim, of Oceanside, N.Y., Daniel Purcell Jr. and wife Rachel of Stafford, Jennifer Moerman of Stafford, Patricia Purcell of Spotsylvania County, Stephanie Polickoski of Stafford, Peter Moerman of Stafford and Gabrielle Moerman of Stafford; four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Louis Edward Purcell, Isabella Faith Polickoski and Georgia Eleanor Moerman; three sisters, Miriam Massucci of Long Island, N.Y., Ann Riso and husband Lou of Goshen, N.Y., and Eleanor Franzese of Tampa Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A Mass of celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va. 23060; or Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
