newcomers, friends meet wednesday
The Newcomers and Old Friends Club will have its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.-noon, at the Chancellor Ruritan Building, 5994 Plank Road.
Guest speaker will be Archer Di Peppe, who will discuss his Peace Corps experience in West Africa or "everything you never wanted to know about local government." He was on the Stafford County Planning Commission for four years.
All new and established area residents are invited. Newcomers and Old Friends is a non-profit social and charitable organization. For more information call 540/972-1163.
WOMEN FOR OBAMA HAVE OCT. 6 SESSION
Women for Obama, a King George County group, plans a session to discuss the various issues facing women called "Standing Together We Are Strong."
The event is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the King George Masonic Lodge.
The main speaker will be Melody Cook, wife of Adam Cook, who is running for Congress in Virginia's 1st District.
Other speakers include Pam Yueng from Organizing for America and Daisy Douglas.

Master gardener event set tuesday
The Master Gardener 4th Tuesday Series at Salem Library continues Tuesday with Tara Hoit speaking on "Don't Be Afraid of the Shade."
The event is set for 7 p.m. at the Salem Church Library in Room A.
SUSTAINABLE FOOD PROGRAM AT LIBRARY
Adults can learn about "Foraging for Edible Food" Saturday, 3-5 p.m., at the Porter Branch
The event, which will show the differences between what you can and can't eat from the wilds, is part of "Cultivating Community," an initiative designed to share information about farm-to-table and sustainable food communities.
Then, on Oct. 8 at library headquarters 7-9 p.m. will be a discussion of Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," the story of her family's challenge to grow and buy food locally in Southwest Virginia.
