It's simple: For roads, raise the fuel-tax rate

I agree with Cord Sterling ["Toll booth on I-95: No panacea, but a start," Sept. 14], but he is a bit simplistic. Need money for roads? Virginia has had this problem for years. The vehicle for obtaining more revenue is on the books and has been for years: Raise the fuel-tax rate.

There's no need to build another state bureaucracy or hire another Australian toll-road operator. We travel a lot in our RV and have known for years that fuel in our state is the cheapest in the area. Why? Because our wimpy politicians are afraid to raise the tax rate.

Raising the rate of taxes is not necessarily a political third rail. George H.W. Bush didn't lose the election because of "no new taxes." He lost to a more savvy politician.
