MINE RUN VFD SETS YARD-SALE EVENT
The Mine Run Volunteer Fire Department will hold a community yard sale, rain or shine, 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the department, 31077 Old Plank Road at Locust Grove.
Space rental for an 8-foot table space, with the table provided, is $10 on gravel, $15 under the pavilion and $20 inside.
Pavilion spots fill quickly. Call Dawn Woolfrey at 540/854-5597 to reserve space. Money will be collected upon arrival.
deadline oct. 1 for artist fellowships
The Virginia Commission for Arts invites Virginia-based artists to apply for the 2012-13 Artist Fellowships in Painting, with applications due Oct. 1.
Fellowships of $5,000 are awarded annually by the commission to recognize the creative excellence of individual Virginia artists and to support their pursuit of artistic excellence.
Interested artists may obtain an application by downloading forms from arts.virginia.gov/grants/Artistfellowships.html or by calling 804/225-3132.
K.G. DEMOCRATS HAVE PLANNING MEETING
The King George County Democratic Committee will have a planning meeting on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Smoot Library, the former King George Middle School in Dahlgren.
The group will discuss the need for volunteers to work at the polls during the November election and to man the Democratic Committee's table at the Fall Festival on Oct. 13. More information is available by contacting Pearl Smith at 540/663-2766.
Fundraiser set for 'A Cat's Friend'
A Cat's Friend, a cat rescue volunteer organization in Woodbridge, will hold a bowling fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Liberty Lanes in Massaponax.
Hours are 2-5 p.m.
Cost is $15, with shoe rental included. Preregistration is required.

The event will include several door prizes, including one valued at more than $500.
Church holding consignment sale
The Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 7310 Old Plank Road, will hold a children's consignment sale Friday and Saturday.
Fall and winter clothing, toys, books, shoes, infant furnishings, maternity and more will be available.
All proceeds will go toward sending youth and adults to renovate homes across the U.S. next June.
Checks, cash and credit cards will be accepted. Hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

K.G. Garden Club holds plant sale
The King George Garden Club will hold its fall plant sale 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday at the King George Farmers Market.
The market is held at the King George Elementary School at the corner of State Routes 3 and 205.
spotsylvanians taking singers
The Spotsylvanians Community Chorus, which began rehearsals on Monday, Sept. 10, has extended the opportunity for local singers to join the group through Monday.
The group rehearses at the Marshall Center in Spotsylvania Courthouse on Monday evenings, 7-9 p.m.
