The old stuff

September 25, 2012 12:10 am

FOR YEARS we've called for this area to create a classical music station, one of those amenities that signify a culturally refined community. So we're pleased to give a kudos to WWED-FM (89.5), located in Spotsylvania County and serving Greater Fredericksburg with some of the best music ever created by earthly beings.

WWED, which simulcasts with another FM station that serves Lynchburg, has tried several formats since it started in 2005--praise and worship, gospel, bluegrass, and contemporary Christian among them. But only since February has it been Classics Radio, leavening an often harsh world with the sublime works of history's greatest composers. And with 8,000 watts boosting WWED's voice, much of our region can hear Bach and Handel, Ravel and Vivaldi loud and clear.

So for classical-music fans, no more scratchy signals that come with living at the edge of the D.C. and Richmond transmission circles. No more "All Things (Left) Considered" crypto-editorials or NPR paeans to Third World music that's about as euphonious as the sound of a cat coughing up a hair ball.

Now it's official, Greater Fredericksburg. We got class.
