Goode Vernon Mott

Goode Vernon Mott, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, in Fredericksburg.

Vernon, as he was called throughout his life, was a native of Stuttgart, Ark., and a son of the late James and Willie Mae Mott. Vernon's family moved from Stuttgart to Little Rock, Ark., where he joined and was baptized at Union AME Church. He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Little Rock in 1960.

Vernon was a retired Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police officer and court security officer with the U.S. Marshals Service in Arlington. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Fredericksburg. Showing his love of helping children, Vernon was a football coach with the Pop Warner Little League in Gary Ind.

Spending time with family, fishing and golfing were just some of his pastimes. For those who knew and loved Vernon, there is no way to sum up his wonderful life.

Vernon was the beloved husband of Juanita L. Mott; a loving father to Kenneth D. Mott of Silver Spring, Md., Keith D. Mott of Los Angeles and Kimberly D. Mott and Karen D. Mott, both of Fredericksburg; and a grandfather to Nya Mott of Virginia and Sydney Mott of Maryland. He also leaves to cherish his memory two loving sisters, Linda Wallace (Melvin) of Lanham, Md., and Islah Abdullah (Shaheed) of North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, with viewing at 11 a.m. prior to the service, at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg.
