Crime prevention day scheduled

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit, the Crime Prevention Council and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 4391 will hold the 13th annual Crime Prevention Day on Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, 5100 Jake McWhirt Lane in Spotsylvania County.

The event will include children's activities, barrel-train rides, moon bounce, face painting and crime prevention educational giveaways.

Booths will feature DARE, Rape Aggression Defense, Citizens Patrol Academy and the Cadet Division.

Elwood manor hosting event

Elwood Manor, just off State Route 20 west of the intersection with State Route 3, will hold a living-history event today, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

There will be exhibits and demonstrations of traditional crafts and trades of the 18th and early 19th centuries, a special presentation on architecture of the period, timber framing, blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking and more.

The event is sponsored by Friends of Wilderness Battlefield.

WOMEN FOR OBAMA SCHEDULE SESSION

Women for Obama, a King George County group, plans a session to discuss the various issues facing women called "Standing Together We Are Strong."

The event is planned for 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the King George Masonic Lodge.

The main speaker will be Melody Cook, wife of Adam Cook, who is running for Congress in Virginia's 1st District.

Other speakers will include Pam Yueng from Organizing for America and Daisy Douglas.

deadline set for artist fellowships

The Virginia Commission for Arts invites Virginia-based artists to apply for the 2012-13 Artist Fellowships in Painting, with applications due Monday.

Fellowships of $5,000 are awarded annually by the commission to recognize the creative excellence of individual Virginia artists and to support their pursuit of artistic excellence.

Interested artists may obtain an application by downloading forms from arts.virginia.gov/grants/Artistfellowships.html or by calling 804/225-3132.
