A. Carl Spangler

Arthur Carl Spangler died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, after a 16-year battle with cancer.

Carl was born July 9, 1937, in Parkersburg, W.Va. He was the son of Lynwill Kelsey and Bernece McKean Spangler. When he was 8 years old, his father died. His mother moved with her two sons to Morgantown, W.Va.

Carl knew from the age of 5 that he wanted to pursue a career in art. He graduated in 1959 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., one of the nation's leading art schools.

He married Louise E. Mohrmann, a fellow student, on Oct. 31, 1959, two years after meeting at a Halloween party.

Carl leaves a family who loved him dearly, including his wife of almost 53 years, Louise; son Carl Lincoln Spangler, wife Xinh and grandson Quan, all of Northampton, Mass., and son Eric Spangler, wife Mandi and granddaughters Rowan and True Hope, all of Anchorage, Alaska; and brother Lyn Spangler of Tenafly, N.J.

Carl worked for several years in New York City as an art director and with Louise formed a graphic design firm in 1968. They moved with the boys to Fredericksburg in 1976 to take advantage of Fredericksburg's proximity to D.C. and Richmond. They continued to collaborate on graphic design projects for a wide variety of clients.

Carl was always happiest when at home with family. He loved music, particularly jazz, and was known for his ready smile, dry humor, friendliness and unlimited stock of stories.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
